Glutamine is a free form amino acid that's abundant in the body and in most protein rich foods.  It's an important amino acid intermediate to a number of processes throughout the body.  Glutamine is crucial for protein synthesis and is depleted during heavy exercise.  Under these circumstances glutamine may be considered a conditionally essential amino acid.  Thus, it has been shown that glutamine supplementation can boost muscular growth.
